US and allies launch air strikes against Syria, Russia vows to retaliate

The US and its allies UK and France launched air strikes targeting many government targets in Syria on Friday, media reports said. The reports added that many alleged chemical weapons sites were bombed in the operation.

In an address to the nation from the White House, US President Donald Trump said that the nations of “Britain, France, and the United States of America have marshalled their righteous power against barbarism and brutality”.

The attack is in response to a suspected chemical attack on the Syrian town of Douma last week, the reports added. Explosions hit the capital, Damascus and two sites near the city of Homs, the Pentagon said.

In a stern response, Russia’s ambassador to the US was quoted as saying that the attack on its ally “will not be left without consequences
